The American Writing Prize, previously the Winchester Writing Prize and before that the McCall Writing Prize, originally began as a small middle school newspaper project. After realizing that there was a lack of student-produced publication platforms in our community, we hoped to create a space where students could feel comfortable sharing their thoughts with a larger audience. We are now a registered nonprofit that is expanding beyond our community to students around the world. More about our story can be read in the Stroll Magazine.

Shreya Jha is the founder and President of The American Writing Prize. She is a junior at Winchester High School and has always had a love for writing. When she was younger, because of her teacher in elementary school, she was exposed to writing contests from a young age and started to explore her literary voice early on. She realized quickly, however, that most kids her age did not have that experience outside of the classroom and wanted to change that. To combat this, she created an environment where every kid could have the chance to publish their writing. She hopes to continue this organization for many years to come and make the American Writing Prize a lifelong project.
